10 Lies the Devil Wants You to Believe

Devil Lies-Tiffany ParkerIt was a sunny Wednesday morning and I woke up with an overwhelming feeling of dread. I was tired, felt sick, felt overwhelmed before I even opened my eyes, and in the midst of it I heard a voice in my head telling me: Today was going to be a tough day. I am going to be depressed and tired. I will not accomplish anything. And there is nothing I can do about it. The devil began his work on my mind well before anything even happened.

I wish I can say this occurrence is a rare one, but honestly, this happens all the time. The only way I have been able to find victory in this area is to recognize our enemy, the devil. To recognize the way he works and the way he begins his attack in our minds when we are most vulnerable.

The Bible is very clear about the fact that we have a living and powerful enemy. And his one and only goal is to veer us away from Jesus. To make us miserable and to lead us into destruction we feel we can never get out of. And the sad part, he is dang good at it. The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8 to “Be alert and sober minded. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a lion looking for someone to devour.”

The devil has studied you from the day you were born.

He knows what makes you tick, what breaks your heart, where your weaknesses are and like a lion hunting a baby gazelle, he hunts you down. Victory comes when believers recognize the power they have in Christ and learn the devils schemes so that they can fight powerfully against him. God has given us every weapon we need to defeat the devil.

It says in 1 John 4:4 “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

That is some good news right there! This means that whatever power or attack the devil brings against you, you are more powerful through the Spirit of God. You can fight back and you can win. He can only hang around and torment you if you let him.

The day I learned this, was the day I began seeing victory in my life. I began to recognize the way the devil attacks me and once I recognized it I was able to fight back through prayer, scripture and just plain refusing to believe the lies he is telling me.

Here are 10 lies the devil works overtime to make you believe:

  1. You are powerless.

The devil wants you to believe you have no power to change any circumstances in your life. He wants you to believe you are a victim. But the word of God shows us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us and nothing is impossible for those who trust in God. So don’t believe this lie for a second, you are never powerless!

2. That God doesn’t move or work miracles anymore.

The devil would love nothing more than for you to believe that God’s power was a thing of the past or back in Bible times, but this is a lie from the pit of hell. God is as much alive now as He was back then. The Bible tells us he never changes, he is the same today, tomorrow and forever.

3. That success, status and money are the way to happiness.

So many people are out there running themselves into the ground trying to search for their happiness through careers, accomplishments, bigger houses, newer cars, constantly competing to find the ‘arrival’ everyone dreams of. The devil loves to keep you preoccupied with things of this world to keep your eyes off the real purpose and peace that is found in Jesus. No amount of money, fame, success, or accomplishments can make you happy, bring you purpose or fill that emptiness in your heart.

4. That you can never change.

The devil loves to convince you that you will never change and that you can never change. This is a complete and total lie. God is in the business of new beginnings and can change even the hardest of hearts. You can never change yourself on your own, but with God, change is inevitable because we become more and more like him and he molds us into who we are called to be. Someone we can be proud of and someone we can love. If there is something that you feel stuck in, and believe it will never change- the devil is working on you and you have a choice to stand up to it and refuse to believe the lie. Changing takes time and it wont happen overnight but never lose hope and the belief that it will happen.

5. That your past will always define you.

The Lord came to give us new life. That we would be born again and that he would do a new work. The past is the past. Forgiveness and the love of God wipes us clean of those things. We have the power to move on, forget and have an amazing present and future.

6. That you are not forgiven and need to live a shamed and guilty life.

Wow- this is a huge one! The devil wants nothing more than to see you guilty, ashamed and stuck. But God came to give forgiveness and to never think of those mistakes again. I have a way of differentiating between the Lord and the devil in this area. We obviously need to be convicted if we do something wrong and have a repentant spirit, but when that conviction and understanding becomes condemnation that is now guilting us long after we ask for forgiveness and move on, that is the devil trying to keep you stuck.

7. That The Word of God is not true.

The devil would love to get you involved in debates about the legitimacy of the Bible and convince you that it is not true and simply another best selling book. But this is the biggest lie of all. The Bible is the living word of God. It is our manual for life. It is the book that keeps changing lives, and proving its legitimacy more and more with each passing year. Once we accept his salvation and love in our lives, He begins to unveil our eyes and allow us to see the truth through faith.

8. That The Word of God changes with the culture and times.

The devil would love you to think that the Word of God is not applicable and that it changes with culture. That pieces can be removed and molded depending on what the culture wants it to say, but this is a huge lie. It is the same as it ever was. Faith in God does not change with culture or conform to the ways of this world.

9. Going to church and being a ‘good person’ will get you into heaven.

Many people believe that being a good person means they are a “Christian” or will automatically be going to heaven when they die, but Romans 10:9 is very clear when it says “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” It also says in Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.” Good works and being a good person is an absolute reflection of your faith and a huge part of a walk with God but it is not the saving power that will bring you into eternal life. It is the fruits of a heart changed for God. Believing in him and a personal relationship is the only way to eternal life.

10. That he is not real and neither is hell.

Lastly, but most importantly, the devil does not want you to believe he is real and does not want you to believe that hell is a real place of eternal torment. He wants to remain a fictitious cartoon character with a red cape and horns. Because as long as he is not real, no one can fight against him and he can win every time. He goes to great lengths to convince people he is nothing more than a metaphor or a mythical creature. But he is very much real, very much living and prowling this earth and leading people into the literal pits of hell.

Once I began to understand these lies and the way the devil works I began to see so much breakthrough in my life. I no longer have to believe every negative thought that comes into my head. I no longer have to spend full days depressed or hopeless. I can have victory and remember what God says about me and what the Word of God says to be true. It is a good place to live! I hope this article will help you identify and defeat the enemy.

MUCH LOVE,
